Do you know “goze,” female traveling entertainers?
Goze are female travelling entertainers who are blind.They were active from the Edo period until 1964, and at their peak, in the mid-Meiji period, 89 people lived in the area around the present-day Gangi in the Takada area of Joetsu City. Kadozuke was a winter event in which goze would perform shamisen music and songs at the doorsteps of houses on Ganki Dori in advance of a concert, in order to announce the concert.

This event will recreate the ‘Kadozuke’ performance of shamisen and songs that used to be performed in the Takada area of Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, and will bring back scenes from the past to Gangi Street.

■Venue:Takada Komachi → Maruyama House in front of Gonotsuji Inari and Takeuchi House on the west side of Omachi 5 → Old Imai Dyeing Shop (gate-facing and photo time) → Goze Museum → Kishinami House on the west side of Omachi 5 → Takada Komachi
■Description: Walk through the town of Gangi with Yukiko Tsukioka, heir to the goze-uta, and the goze-actors, and recreate the kadozuke.
