The outdoor jazz festival “Madarao Jazz” will be held on July 6 (Sat.) and 7 (Sun.), with jazz bands performing on a special stage in the great outdoors at the Madarao Plateau ski resort on the border of Niigata and Nagano prefectures.

The Madarao Jazz was launched in 2007 as a handmade event by local people and jazz fans from all over Japan, and this year marks the 16th time it has been held. Jazz bands from all over Japan perform on a specially constructed outdoor stage on the 1,000-meter-high plateau of Madarao, and the event has always been enjoyed by many jazz fans. This year will be the first time the event has been held in two years.

This year’s two-day event will feature 22 bands from all over Japan, including a big band consisting of about 20 members, as well as smaller bands and gospel groups. Among them will be “J-O-Y Gospel,” a gospel group active in the Joetsu area.

About 15 food and beverage booths will be lined up around the stage and the gentle slope that will serve as the seating area.

In addition to delicious gourmet food from local restaurants, a booth selling Nagano wine and ciders will be set up jointly by Nagano Prefecture and the Ikarao Jazz Executive Committee.

If you take the Shinkansen bullet train, you can get to Iiyama Station in 10 minutes from Joetsu Myoko Station, and from there it is a 30-minute bus ride to the venue. If you are driving, it takes about one hour from Joetsu. We look forward to seeing you again at this year’s event, and hope you will all come to Madarao.
