The harvesting of figs has started at “Farm Azegami” in Miyajima, Itakura-Ward, Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture.
Farm Azegami cultivates about 450 fig trees over an area of 3000㎡. This is the largest of the 15 fig farms in Joetsu.
This year’s harvest began last week, a week or two later than usual due to the effects of a long rainy season. According to Farm Azegami, “The long rains presented challenges for growing the figs, which we had to overcome. However, the harvest is expected to be normal.”
The fig variety harvested at this time is “Masui Dauphin”. It is a variety that accounts for 70% of the figs cultivated in Japan, and is characterized by being sweet, resistant to diseases, and easy to grow.
Work begins at 5am. Morning is the optimum time for harvesting the figs at their peak firmness and sweetness.
About 300 figs can be obtained from one tree. On this day, 80 kg were harvested, which is more than usual. The figs are sweeter than you can imagine!
Harvesting continues until mid-November while changing varieties. You can buy the farm figs at “Arurunbatake” in Joetsu City, “Direct Sales Center Tomato” in Myoko City, “Shikisaikan Myoko”, etc.
