Chinkororo, a lucky charm for the koshogatsu season, is now on sale at Obamaya Confectionery in Yoshikawa-ku, Joetsu City. The Chinese zodiac sign for this year, “Tatsu”, is associated with the wish to “break the bad luck trend”.

At Obamaya Confectionary Shop, we sell “chinkoros” every year during this season. Chinkoro is a lucky charm for the New Year, made of kneaded Uruchi rice flour in the shape of animals such as the Chinese zodiac.

This year, in addition to the Chinese zodiac sign “Tatsu,” there are five types: sarubobo, dog, rabbit, and bird. Each is about 3 cm in size, and after forming, they are steamed and cooled before completion.

Each item is handmade by three family members, including the owner, Takashi Nakamura.

This year we have had a big earthquake since the New Year. (I made the zodiac sign “Tatsu” in the hope that it will break the bad trend and bring good luck in the coming year.

According to the Obamaya Confectionary Shop, some people buy chinkoros to pray for a good harvest, safe delivery, and success in school.
