Hydrangea flowers have begun to change color around the Shozenji Dam in Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, and will be at their best by the end of this month.
Around 2,500 hydrangeas are planted around Shozenji Dam. The hydrangeas began to change color last week and are now in their 5th minute of bloom. The hydrangeas were planted by the Shozenji Hydrangea Club, a residents’ group, and 20 new hydrangeas were planted this year.
The association also usually takes care of the undergrowth, pruning, etc. The hydrangeas will be in full bloom later this month, which means that visitors can enjoy a variety of colors, including blue, red, and purple.
Usually, the lights illuminate approximately 800 meters along the road to the dam, but this year the lights are reduced to the area around the dam administration building for safety reasons, as the Shozenji area is detoured due to the construction of Prefectural Road 199, which leads to Nakanomata.
The lights will be up until next Saturday, September 9. Hours are 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm.
Mr. Tomio Ozawa of the Hydrangea Association
I hope you enjoy the hydrangeas with care because of the heavy traffic this year.”
