Boil-in-a-bag curry using edible “Physalis fruit” has been created as a speciality of Myoko City, Niigata Prefecture. The end result is very healthy, even without meat or fish added. What does it taste like …?
This is the physalis fruit curry – “Myoko Hozuki Karei (curry)”
Whole physalis fruit are added and the roux is flavoured with mango and pineapple. Cumin spice is also added for a refreshing, ethnic taste. With the concept of health and beauty in mind, it was developed as a product for women without using any meat, fish, synthetic additives or chemical seasonings.
ASAP Co. Ltd. cultivates edible physalis in Myoko City. They developed the curry, and are working on making it a speciality. “It’s a curry that brings out the sweetness, fruitiness, and aroma of physalis,” said Ogawa, the managing director.
ASAP started cultivating physalis in a greenhouse four years ago. The controlled conditions in the greenhouse sweetens the fruit.
Mr. Ogawa said, “In winter, when the trees begin bearing the fruit, the contrasting temperatures between night and day cause the fruit to become sweet. This into taken into consideration during cultivation.”
One “Myoko Hozuki Karei” costs 600 yen (tax excluded). You can purchase it at Arai Road Station, Arrun field, and Enjoy Plaza at the West Exit of Joetsu Myoko Station. Mr. Ogawa says, “I’m working hard to grow physalis into a speciality of Myoko City. If you haven’t eaten the curry yet, it would make me happy if you would try it.”。
